On the occasion of the Tricentennial of the founding of New Orleans, the Louisiana Historical Society presents a selection of the men and women who contributed to the creation of the New Orleans community. Some received notice in their lifetimes, others not. Their achievements serve as models for the present generation, so that men and women of today will persevere in building up New Orleans.

William D. Reeves is a New Orleans native, a graduate of Williams College and Tulane University with a Ph. D. in 1968. An independent scholar, for the past twenty years he has devoted himself to researching Louisiana plantations for clients. His favorite work covers the lower False River in Point Coupee Parish, the life of Edward Douglass White, the history of Westwego, and the story of New Orleans City Park.
